Movie Review: “Disclosure Day”

The summer blockbusters are rolling in! Steven Spielberg’s newest alien sci-fi, thriller, “Disclosure Day,” has arrived. And after bringing us legendary extraterrestrial stories like “E.T.” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, I’m sad to say this highly anticipated alien mystery lacks the Spielberg magic we’ve come to love from his previous theatrical treasures.

“Disclosure Day” asks the question, what if you found out we are not alone and someone was able to show you undeniable evidence of alien life. Would that scare you? It’s an interesting question and could be an interesting movie if the script and the characters were not all over the place. In the film, Dr. Daniel Kellner is on the run from his underground government boss; he carries a great deal of proof that aliens are among us and feels that entire world should finally know the truth. Luckily for him, a Kansas weather girl, who shockingly is linked to the aliens, can help Kellner get the message out.

There are several issues with this film. It appears; there wasn’t a clear intention of which direction they wanted to go. The tone bounces around from a serious drama to a hokey and unconvincing kids’ movie. There are numerous plot holes in the convoluted storylines, and the underdeveloped characters make any “emotional” or climatic scenes feel unearned. The saving grace of “Disclosure Day” and the real reason to watch, is Emily Blunt’s award-worthy performance as Margaret Fairchild. She brings energy and personality, as well as humor to the very long, two and half hour, underwhelming sci-fi. Though the rest of the all-star cast, including Josh O’ Connor, Colin Firth, and Coleman Domingo do a fine job, their surface-level roles are not as memorable.

There is thrilling action that entertains, and the comedic relief makes the film worth a trip to the box office but set your expectations low. It does pain me to speak negatively about this movie, especially because of Blunt’s performance, but Spielberg can and has done much better than this. The intent to reflect on humanity and have empathy for the known is admirable and greatly appreciated, but the efforts made to bring that message to the screen fell flat and rings hallow.

Movie Review: “Drop”

“Drop” premiered at this year’s South by Southwest with rave reviews about the exhilarating new thriller. It’s not easy to get back into the dating world, especially after a traumatic relationship. Director Christopher Landon takes audiences on a horrifying first date in what might eventually become an instant cult classic.

The film follows Violet, a widowed mother, played by “White Lotus” star Meghann Fahy who is going on her first date in years. With the help of her sister, who’s agreed to babysit her son while out, she musters up the courage to put herself back out there and meets with a charming photographer played by Brandon Sklenar. Unfortunately, this potential for romance turns into a mother’s worst nightmare as Violet is bombarded with anonymous texts that threaten her son’s life. Trapped in a high rise, upscale restaurant, she must figure out who is behind the messages to save both her son and her date’s life.

If you’re familiar with Landon’s work on films like “Freaky” or “Happy Death Day”, you’ll have an idea of his style of horror. He adds an element of comedy that allows you to breathe a little easier through his character’s high stressed situations. While there are moments of comic relief, “Drop” creates an anxiety-inducing setting with time constraints and focus on suspense. But don’t be fooled by its frightening premise, the film has a few jump scares, but it never takes itself too seriously. In fact, expect a few eye rolls when entering ridiculous and campy territory. It’s Fahy’s devoted and captivating performance that will sell you on any absurd action.

The heart of this film lies with Meghann Fahy, who continues to shine in any role she plays. But “Drop” succeeds in blending romance, wit, and tension into a simple yet tech-savvy, entertaining thrill ride that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Movie Review: “The Night House” Gives Thrills & Chills

I’ll admit, I scare easily. Films that aren’t even scary (Boo! A Madea Halloween) make me jump. But when I watch a truly, good horror film, I am on the edge of my seat, holding my breath during the entirety of the film. The only breather breaks are my screams. In David Bruckner’s new horror, “The Night House”, I screamed three times.

After her husband, Owen’s (Evan Jonigkeit) unexpected suicide, Beth (Rebecca Hall) is left alone in their large lake house, and suddenly haunted by a mysterious spirit. Beth heads down a dangerous rabbit hole as this leads her to digging into her husband’s dark secrets.

What Bruckner captures here is a very real and painful portrayal grief and depression. It’s not an easy subject matter to tackle, but it’s handled so well here. From Beth’s drinking, re-watching old videos of her husband, to how she interacts with her colleagues and people around her. Owen’s death has consumed Beth and is affecting her daily life and personal relationships.

If you saw Hall in the underrated drama, “Christine”, you already know how well she can portray a woman on the edge struggling with depression. So, it comes as no surprise that Hall’s performance as a grief-stricken widow is incredibly powerful. Your heart absolutely breaks for Beth as she asks the questions one would probably have if their husband chose to end their life: Why? Was he that unhappy? How was he so good at hiding it? Did I really know him at all? Was he a monster and I had no idea? These are just a few of the questions the film will answer.

“The Night House” is shot and edited beautifully. Paired with Kathrin Eder’s unsettling production design and the eerie music by Ben Lovett, the film makes for an engaging and terrifying experience.

Where the film falls short, is that it’s slightly over ambitious. Though questions are answered for the most part, there might be some confusion at the end, and there are a few small plot holes. But if you can piece together a narrative that satisfies you, then this may not be an issue.

“The Night House” is a creative story with gripping visuals and captivating performances.
