Mondays throughout the month of April, cinematographers, producers and other Hollywood professionals who helped bring audiences “Avengers: Endgame,” “Joker,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Venom” and more will explore the debate on whether or not superhero movies are cinema.

TEMPE, ARIZONA – April 17, 2020 – ASU Film Spark, Arizona State University’s industry relations program in Hollywood, is hosting a series of free online Q&A sessions with respected Hollywood professionals on Mondays throughout the month of April on the Film Spark YouTube channel. ASU Film Spark welcomes anyone who is interested in hearing from some of the people who help create your favorite films to join them at 7:30PM PST for the live-streamed events.

This series features conversations with cinematographers, producers and other Hollywood professionals who aim to answer the question, Are Superhero Movies Cinema? Speakers include:

  • April 13: Larry Sher, cinematographer, “Joker” and “The Hangover” – Watch his session here
  • April 20: Chris Edwards, founder/CEO of visualization studio THE THIRD FLOOR, “Avengers: Endgame”; “The Mandalorian”; “Star Wars Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker”
  • April 27: Matt Tolmach, producer and executive producer, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” ”Venom,” “Jumanji” and “Future Man”

“Martin Scorsese’s claim that superhero movies aren’t cinema gives aspiring filmmakers the chance to think hard about the definition of ‘cinema,’” said Adam Collis, founding director of ASU Film Spark. “And who better to explore this question than some of the best filmmakers working today. ASU Film Spark has been sharing this special class with our friends at Santa Monica College, and, during these stay-at-home times, we are honored and excited to now share the class with anyone who loves movies, cinema or both.”

Arizona State University, which has been ranked as the most innovative school in the nation for the last five years in a row, is also the nation’s largest university and built on a charter which puts inclusivity in its very first sentence. In this spirit, ASU Film Spark is thrilled to include film students, cinephiles, comic fans, aspiring moviemakers and movie-lovers of all stripes in conversation.

“I’m proud to have been the first industry guest Adam connected to ASU back in 2009, when we did a video conference with his students,” said Lawrence Sher, cinematographer for “Joker” and “The Hangover” series. “Since then, I’ve seen Film Spark and the film program grow in astonishing ways. ASU really is the most innovative school in the nation, and their students are spectacular. Our exploration of the superhero genre and the definition of cinema was a blast and one of the more thought-provoking conversations I’ve had on the subject.”

“Are Superhero Movies CINEMA?” is the latest example of innovative Film Spark classes and programming. Their Feature Film Internship Initiative gave 85 ASU students and 15 recent alumni the chance to learn filmmaking on an actual feature film set from an Oscar-winning cast and crew including Octavia Spencer, George Lopez and Nia Vardalos. Other examples include their Women in Film Zoom Q&A class featuring producer/former studio chief Nina Jacobson, director/co-chair of the DGA diversity committee Bethany Rooney and others; a semester-long class with Lionsgate in which students case-studied the film “Wonder” just before it was released; and a two-day symposium with producer Walter Parkes called “Inventing the Future All Over Again,” for which Film Spark reassembled the team of futurists Parkes gathered in 1999 to help Steven Spielberg create the futuristic world of Minority Report. Film Spark has also brought Spike Lee, Patricia Cardoso, Fanny Grande, Salvador Carrasco and Boots Riley to campus for special events and screenings at Sun Devil Stadium.

Guests who would like to receive an email reminder on the day of the event as well as updates about future events may RSVP here. RSVPs are not required and you may view each live session by visiting the Film Spark YouTube channel at 7:30PM MST on Mondays in April.

B&B Theatres Wylie Brings the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Movie Fun Run!

B&B THEATRES WYLIE 12 BRINGS NOSTALGIC 80’s FLASHBACK WITH THE ‘TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA MOVIE FUN RUN’ FEATURING A RARE APPEARANCE BY ‘PARTNERS IN KRYME’ PERFORMING TURTLE POWER!

No decade has shaped pop culture quite like the 1980s.

1980: The release of Pac-Man

1982: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial lands in theatres

1983:  The Cabbage Patch phenomenon crops up

1984:  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird form Mirage Studios and publish their first comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Turtles dominated the media landscape through the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in multiple feature films, a hugely successful animated television program, action figures mania, and much more.  While these collectibles and throwbacks yank at the heartstrings of nostalgic Babies of the Eighties, the future looks bright for the Boys in Green as Paramount Pictures prepares for the upcoming release of the revitalized and reimagined Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8).

B&B Theatres Wylie 12 with Marquee Suites celebrates the exciting return of the Turtles to the big screen, but acknowledges that the bodacious potential of the future is contingent upon understanding the radical contributions of the past.  To herald in the new feature, B&B Theatres in Wylie is hosting the first ever Teenage Mutant Ninja Movie Fun Run, a Turtles-themed 5k held on August 2nd.  Participants will receive t-shirts, tubular turtle headbands, and raffle entries for great prizes, not to mention the chance to get the shell off the sofa and enjoy some good, ol’ fashioned exercise.

But that’s not all!

All participants will be invited to attend a free showing of the classic 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.  Sound awesome?  It will be.  The only thing that could make it better would be watching the film with the Turtles themselves….WHICH WILL BE POSSIBLE since all four turtles will be in town to support the race and take pictures with any eager turtle fans, keep the Foot Clan at bay, and share a slice with their fans. (Turtles courtesy of Turtle Power Entertainment) No turtle event would be complete without the essentials, and by essentials, we mean PIZZA! Everyone that joins us for the race will get a piece of Mr. Jim’s pizza before watching the movie on our MASSIVE GRAND SCREEN!

We will also have on site the foremost expert on Ninja Turtles with YouTube Sensation Andre Meadows of ‘Black Nerd Comedy’! With over 250,000 subscribers, many people are eager to learn about his thoughts on anything turtle related! The Allen American’s hockey team will be joining us with a Casey Jones ‘Slapshot Challenge’ and we will have David DeGrand (Artist for Mad Magazine and Spongebob Squarepants) drawing free sketches for all kids! The event is not just for adults as we will have a FREE Turtle Trot for Kids 11 and Under at 9am before the festivities kick off!

But the icing on the cake (or pizza, if you prefer) is the exciting news that PARTNERS IN KRYME will make a rare appearance to perform the classic anthem “TURTLE POWER” and a never-before-released new track, “ROCK THE HALFSHELL”.  Not only will PARTNERS IN KRYME be performing their new song, but everyone in the auditorium will be A PART OF THE MUSIC VIDEO! Couple this with additional games and events, good food,  great friends, and the fact that ALL proceeds go to benefit the Wylie Christian Care Center, and you’ve got a recipe for a turtle-tastic event that will be sure to let Shredder and his goons know that TURTLE POWER is alive and well in Wylie.

Movie Review: Instructions Not Included

At first glance this film might seem like a predicable slap stick comedy;  but after a deeper look, you will see there is much more to this movie than meets the eye.

Eugenio Derbez and Loreto Peralta star in “Instructions Not Included”

Eugenio Derbez makes his directorial debut in the family comedy, Instructions Not Included.  Derbez stars in the film as Valentin, the resident playboy in Acapulco.  His life gets completely turned around when one of his ex-flings, Julie (Jessica Lindsey), drops off his unknown baby on his door steps and takes off with out a trace.  In hopes to find Julie and return the baby, Valentin leaves Mexico and heads to Los Angeles.  He ends up finding a job and a home in LA for him and his new found daughter, Maggie (Loreto Peralta).  Not knowing a thing about how to raise a child, Valentin is forced to grow up, and finally make a commitment to one girl.  After six years of raising Maggie, he has established  a comfy life as Hollywood’s top stuntman with Maggie as his on-set coach.  Their lives are turned upside down when Julie returns out of nowhere and Valentin is in danger of losing his daughter.

Even with the cast being mostly new to the big screen, they don’t show any signs of amateur acting.  Eugenio Derbez is one of the biggest actors in Mexico, if not the biggest.  Having already made a few small appearances in American films like Jack and Jill and Girl in Progress, he makes a giant leap as the star, director, and co-writer of Instructions Not Included.  He is a natural comedian and is hilarious in either language.  From his dumb-founded facial expressions to his genuine caring father moments, you’re immediately connected to this character.  Throw in newcomer, Loreto Peralta, as the adorable smart-aleck daughter and you have a dynamic duo.  These two have such great chemistry and a heartwarming father/daughter relationship.  Of course watching Valentin figure out how to take care of baby Maggie using whatever he has around him, including a clever backpack with holes for legs as a baby carrier strap on is priceless.  Maggie’s mother Julie plays a less lovable character.  Jessica Lindsey, does a fantastic job as a selfish and confused baby mama who can’t quite make up her mind on whether or not she’s capable of motherhood.

Instructions Not Included may seem similar to other films where the main character living the single life gets thrown into parenthood.  But this movie isn’t as predicable as Jersey Girl or Raising Helen.  There are moments in this film where you might think you have it figured out, but chances are, you don’t.  The film is in both Spanish and English, but which ever language, the story is clear.  All through the movie Valentin is extremely scared of almost everything, heights, bugs, wolves, commitment.  Once thrown into fatherhood, he naturally starts to conquer all his fears because of the love he has for his daughter.

Rated PG-13 for sexual content and language, Instructions Not Included is film the whole family can see.  There’s laughter, there’s tears and most importantly there’s heart.

Instructions Not Included hits theaters today!
