Back to School! Top 5 Teachers from Film

School starts back up this Monday, and I’m sure a lot teachers and students are dreading the early mornings and the long hours of class.  So in hopes of making people a little less upset that summer break is over,  I thought I’d pick my top 5 favorite teachers from film, and remind ourselves how much EVERY teacher can impact our lives.

5. Dewey Finn- School of Rock

“I have been touched by your kids… and I’m pretty sure that I’ve touched them.”

Low on cash; Dewey Finn poses as his brother so that he may substitute teach at a very posh school.  He ends up teaching his students about classic rock and roll, and turning them into his own miniature rock band.  If there is one thing I love, it’s someone who’s excited about what they do.  Dewey isn’t the best academic teacher.  But when it comes to teaching these students about music, he instills a passion in them that they never knew they had.

4. Sharon Norbury- Mean Girls

“You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it ok for guys to call you sluts and whores.”

Tina Fey played the sympathetic math teacher in the popular teen comedy, Mean Girls. Not only is Ms. Norbury unintentionally hilarious, but she also tries to help pull Cady (Lindsay Lohan) away from the vicious Plastics and gear her into the Mathletes.  And of course, who could forget how she led all the female students in a giant confession and apology to one another, pleading with them to quit hating on each other.

3. Jaime Escalante- Stand and Deliver

“It’s not that they’re stupid, it’s just they don’t know anything.”

Based on a true story, Stand and Deliver portrays a rebellious math teacher who transforms his seemingly hopeless, uninterested students into the top-scorers in the state. Their achievement is so astonishing that the school board accused the Latino students of cheating. Proof, that if you have enough faith in your students and don’t give up on them, they can accomplish anything.

2. Miss Honey- Matilda

“I can’t abandon my children. And if I couldn’t teach, I’d have nothing at all.”

She’s the unbelievably sweet teacher we wish we had as a kid.  Miss Honey bonds with Matilda (Mara Wilson) over their troubled childhoods and eventually adopts Matilda as her own.  As if Matilda wasn’t lucky enough already with her magical powers and finally escaping from her grotesque family, she gets to split a piece of what I can only imagine taste like heaven, chocolates with Miss Honey every night.

1. John Keating- Dead Poets Society

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”

In a school of young men who have their lives laid out for them, one teacher dares to define the system with his unorthodox methods of teaching.  The late, great Robin Williams gave an incredibly touching performance as a teacher who inspires the lives of his prep school students.  His lessons are active, they’re lively, and he motivates his students to explore their true callings.  He taught his kids that there is more out there than just the jobs their parents have on hold for them.  They can become writers, actors, or whatever their creativity guides them to do.  If there were ever a film that made me want to teach, it was and still is Dead Poets Society.

B&B Theatres Wylie Brings the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Movie Fun Run!

B&B THEATRES WYLIE 12 BRINGS NOSTALGIC 80’s FLASHBACK WITH THE ‘TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA MOVIE FUN RUN’ FEATURING A RARE APPEARANCE BY ‘PARTNERS IN KRYME’ PERFORMING TURTLE POWER!

No decade has shaped pop culture quite like the 1980s.

1980: The release of Pac-Man

1982: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial lands in theatres

1983:  The Cabbage Patch phenomenon crops up

1984:  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird form Mirage Studios and publish their first comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Turtles dominated the media landscape through the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in multiple feature films, a hugely successful animated television program, action figures mania, and much more.  While these collectibles and throwbacks yank at the heartstrings of nostalgic Babies of the Eighties, the future looks bright for the Boys in Green as Paramount Pictures prepares for the upcoming release of the revitalized and reimagined Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8).

B&B Theatres Wylie 12 with Marquee Suites celebrates the exciting return of the Turtles to the big screen, but acknowledges that the bodacious potential of the future is contingent upon understanding the radical contributions of the past.  To herald in the new feature, B&B Theatres in Wylie is hosting the first ever Teenage Mutant Ninja Movie Fun Run, a Turtles-themed 5k held on August 2nd.  Participants will receive t-shirts, tubular turtle headbands, and raffle entries for great prizes, not to mention the chance to get the shell off the sofa and enjoy some good, ol’ fashioned exercise.

But that’s not all!

All participants will be invited to attend a free showing of the classic 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.  Sound awesome?  It will be.  The only thing that could make it better would be watching the film with the Turtles themselves….WHICH WILL BE POSSIBLE since all four turtles will be in town to support the race and take pictures with any eager turtle fans, keep the Foot Clan at bay, and share a slice with their fans. (Turtles courtesy of Turtle Power Entertainment) No turtle event would be complete without the essentials, and by essentials, we mean PIZZA! Everyone that joins us for the race will get a piece of Mr. Jim’s pizza before watching the movie on our MASSIVE GRAND SCREEN!

We will also have on site the foremost expert on Ninja Turtles with YouTube Sensation Andre Meadows of ‘Black Nerd Comedy’! With over 250,000 subscribers, many people are eager to learn about his thoughts on anything turtle related! The Allen American’s hockey team will be joining us with a Casey Jones ‘Slapshot Challenge’ and we will have David DeGrand (Artist for Mad Magazine and Spongebob Squarepants) drawing free sketches for all kids! The event is not just for adults as we will have a FREE Turtle Trot for Kids 11 and Under at 9am before the festivities kick off!

But the icing on the cake (or pizza, if you prefer) is the exciting news that PARTNERS IN KRYME will make a rare appearance to perform the classic anthem “TURTLE POWER” and a never-before-released new track, “ROCK THE HALFSHELL”.  Not only will PARTNERS IN KRYME be performing their new song, but everyone in the auditorium will be A PART OF THE MUSIC VIDEO! Couple this with additional games and events, good food,  great friends, and the fact that ALL proceeds go to benefit the Wylie Christian Care Center, and you’ve got a recipe for a turtle-tastic event that will be sure to let Shredder and his goons know that TURTLE POWER is alive and well in Wylie.

Top 5 “Boy Meets World” Episodes

Girl Meets World debuts tomorrow night on Disney channel.  But before we step into the world of Cory and Topanga’s young daughter, let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable moments of the couple and their friends during the original series.

Here are my top 5 Boy Meets World episodes…Well top 6 (this was a VERY hard list!!!).

6. Cult Fiction

Feeling that something is missing, Shawn joins a cult that promises not to judge him. But when Mr. Turner is in a motorcycle accident, Shawn learns it’s the real relationships with people who care about him that matter.

“I don’t want to be empty inside anymore”- Shawn Hunter

Best Moments: After showing him what a “real” hug is from someone who cares about you, Cory forces Shawn to stay with an unconscious Mr. Turner in the hospital room.  There Shawn breaks down and gives a heartfelt monologue, praying that Mr. Turner survives.  We also see just how much the supposed “loner” is loved by the people in his life.

5. Everybody Loves Stuart

Stuart is the cool, young professor that everyone likes. But the tables turn when he makes a move on Topanga in her dorm room, causing a violent reaction from Cory.

“Is it okay if I rip off your head and roll it down the hallway?”- Mr. Feeny

Best Moments: A hilarious, dramatic courtroom entrance by Eric Matthews followed by more proof that Mr. Feeny is the best teacher ever.  Though this episode was at times a little awkward, given the sexual harasser was played by Ben Savage’s older brother, Fred Savage; it’s one that pushed the boundaries of a regular Disney family sitcom.

4. Chick Like Me

Shawn dresses up like a girl to experience a girl’s point of view; and it’s not what he expected.

“Why is everybody staring? What are they looking at?”- Shawn Hunter

Best Moments: We find out that a female version of Shawn is just as hot as the male version.  And we are treated to multiple laughs from the entire episode as Shawn and Cory feel the insecurities of a woman.

3. Last Tango In Philly

Cory and Shawn don’t want to go dancing, so the girls go with two handsome co-workers. The ensuing jealousy only angers Topanga and Angela, and now the boys have a problem. They just want to make their girlfriends happy, but can’t quite figure out how.

“From the beginning of time, men have been idiots.”- Eric Matthews

Best Moments: Meeting Nunzio for the first and last time, “of this I am sure.”  And an unforgettable dance number by all the male characters, who get up on stage and shake their booty to the music of Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff.

2. The Happiest Show On Earth

Cory and Topanga still have feelings for each other, but she’s seen him with so many other girls that she can’t trust him. When Topanga wins a trip to Disney World, he realizes there’s nothing left to do but follow her, and win her back.

“I mean, we did break up for a reason, right?”- Topanga Lawrence
“So we could get back together.”- Cory Matthews

Best Moments: It’s hard to pick just one Cory and Topanga central-focused episode. Their first kiss was epic, and as they got older their break ups, make ups, engagement, marriage, and many other mile stones can never be forgotten.  But their first make up in Disney World wasn’t just sweet, it was magical.

1. And Then There Was Shawn

Locked inside the school during detention, the group is terrorized by a shrouded, skeleton-masked figure. In this fun and frenzied horror movie spoof, the teens must discover who the killer is if they want to escape with their lives.

“Oh my God! They killed Feeny!”- Eric Matthews

Best Moments: There are countless one-liners, a constantly screaming Angela, and a great homage to the “classic” rules of horror flicks.  Jennifer Love Hewitt makes a notable guest appearance as “Jennifer Love Fefferman,” sparking a sneaky jealous Topanga to lurk behind her as she flirts with Cory.  This episode is better than most of the scary movie spoofs made today.

The Alamo Drafthouse’s New Lunch Menu

I continuously tell people that The Alamo Drafthouse has the best food out of any dine-in theater.  I just assumed the food was good because of their tasty, unique dishes.  Plus unlike some theaters, they will modify your meals.  But the secret ingredient behind the Alamo’s delectable creations is Dusty Patek (Bar manager and creator of menu).

For the few of you who have seen Chef,  Dusty is like our local Carl Casper!  He has a strong passion for food and continues to push outside the box with his recipes.  This shows through in his inspiring menu.

Glass Half Full, which is the bar located in The Alamo, has launched a new lunch menu with a variety of quality items that everyone can enjoy.  Here are just a few of the many new choices that stood out.

Soups

A thick, hearty tomato basil soup served in a bread bowl, made from scratch.

Quite possibly the best French onion soup I have ever had. Best of all, both soups are served with a side of pasta salad that is bursting with flavor.  Pasta salads tend to be bland, but the Glass Half Full changes that stereotype with some chopped cucumber, feta cheese, and whatever delicious dressing that has been tossed in.

Salads & Wraps

All salads can be made into a wrap and you can add grilled chicken, steak, or tofu.

Beets & Oranges- Mixed Greens, Pistachios, Goat Cheese, Croutons, Sherry Vinaigrette

MY FAVORITE MENU ITEM!!! Mexican- Mixed Greens, Romaine Hearts, Avocado, Jicama, Cotija, Tortilla Crisps, Red Onion, Jalapeno Lime Vinaigrette.  I wish I had a suitable picture to show you but, sadly, this salad was devoured before I could take one.  It is recommended to add chicken, but I would be fine with just a tub as is.

Caesar- Romaine Hearts, Baby Romaine, Herb Parmesan, Cherry Tomatoes, Spiced Pumpkins Seeds.  Those who enjoy a little zing to their food, will particularly love this Caesar dressing’s spicy kick.

Caesar Salad

Sandwiches

Meatball- House made Beef/Pork Meatballs served on an Amoroso Roll with Marinara, Provolone, Parmesan, Pecorino, and Fresh Basil

Italian- Capicola, Salami, and Prosciutto served on Amoroso Roll and Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Black Pepper, Dried Oregano, Oil, Spicy Cherry Pepper Relish.  I mean just look at it!

Italian Sub Sandwich

Pizza/ Calzones

All pizzas can be made into Calzones.  You can’t go wrong with either one of these choices.

Brussels Sprouts, Smoked Bacon, & Goat Cheese- Olive Oil, Mozzarella, Black Pepper, Parmesan, Pecorino

Pepperoni- Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Pecorino

Tomato & Basil Pesto- Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Pecorino

Artichoke Spinach Pizza- Olive Oil, Garlic, Spinach, Artichoke Hearts, Cherry Tomatoes, Goat Cheese, Mozzarella

Top 5 Best Shows on ABC’s TGIF

Like most kids in any decade, Fridays were always the days I felt most anxious to be let free from school.  But growing up in the 90’s, the anticipation wasn’t from the thoughts of finally sleeping in the next morning or going outside to play with friends.  No, instead every Friday I eagerly awaited getting home, sitting in front of the TV, and watching new episodes of ABC’s Friday night line-up!  Also known as TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Funny).  In honor of the upcoming Boy Meets World spin-off, Girl Meets World, I have decided to look back, and recognize my top 5 shows that aired on the popular program.

5. Full House (1987-1995)

This was an extremely campy show about a single dad who recruits his best friend and brother-in-law to help raise his 3 daughters.  Even though it wasn’t always the best writing and unfunny jokes were supported by laugh tracks, they still attempted to tackle some tough issues like, DJ’s eating disorder and the usual peer pressures of smoking/drinking.  But with such a star studded cast, including the Olsen twins’ first break out roles, it was impossible not to fall in love with all these characters.

4. Family Matters (1989-1998)

Steve Urkel is probably one of the most annoying characters to this date.  His “Did I do that?” catchphrase still makes me cringe.  Despite all this, the writers somehow managed to have us root for him.  A part of us always wanted him with Laura, and we desperately wanted the Winslows to accept him as a second son.  And with the father’s occupation as cop, Family Matters  allowed audiences to see a different type drama and sometimes the most suspenseful episodes out of the line-up.

3. Step By Step (1991-1998)

Here’s a story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls…oh wait, I mean two lovely girls and brainy son.  So maybe Step by Step didn’t follow The Brady Bunch’s exact formula with their kids, but it was basically the modern version of the show.  Surprisingly enough, that decade made for a much more entertaining family.  Realistically, it wouldn’t be all sunshine and rainbows when two single parents marry and want their teenage children to treat each other like family.  Needless to say, there would be a significant amount of fighting, which this sitcom was not afraid to show.  We got to enjoy watching these kids go from hating each other, to gradually caring for one another other as siblings.

2. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003)

It’s crazy to think that a show about a teen witch would become one of the longest lasting series on TGIF.  So long in fact, that it moved Sabrina’s adult years to The WB.  But the show was truly its best when it was on ABC.  I think what made Sabrina a hit, was the fact that Melissa Joan Hart was so relatable.  She was a “normal” girl trying to fit in.  She had all the same problems any teenager would deal with in high school: A mean girl, tough teachers, a secret crush, etc.  It was just fun watching her solve those problems with magic.  I guess we could all live vicariously through her and only wish we had those powers.

1. Boy Meets World (1993-2000)

Boy Meets World isn’t in first place because its new spin-off.  In fact the, only reason anyone is watching that potential disaster is because we all want to see Cory and Topanga as parents.  That and we also hope to see all the other original cast members make guest appearances.  Boy Meets World easily takes the top spot because it was and still is a GREAT show.  The acting was solid, the writing was smart, and it was genuinely funny.  To this day you can still laugh when you hear Eric say “Feeny? Fa-fa-fa-fa-feeny!”  Growing up to a sitcom like this one, I can truthfully say it had an impact on my childhood.  They hit issues that most family kid shows wouldn’t even mention today: Divorce, death, abuse, true love, and so much more.  We can only hope that the Girl Meets World, set to air June 27th, will at least try to touch on some honest age appropriate topics.  So basically nothing like what Disney channel has been producing.  And please don’t give Cory Matthew’s daughter a recording contract!

Honorable Mentions: Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Dinosaurs, Two of a Kind
