Movie Review: “MOMO: The Sam Giancana Story” Reveals more than you Expect

Out of all the documentaries I have seen this year, Momo: The Sam Gianca Story, would not be my top recommendation. Don’t get me wrong, this is a fantastic documentary and absolutely worth the watch for the shocking details alone. The film tends to drag bit, and is more informative than emotionally impacting. It’s a documentary about the infamous Chicago mob boss, Sam Giancana.  The narration is done by two of Sam’s loving daughters, Bonnie Giancana and Fran Giancana, who are now both in their sixties.  They are speaking about their father publicly for the first time in 30 years, and present audiences with never-before-revealed insight into Sam when he was at home.

Sam ran the Chicago Outfit from the late 50’s to the early sixties. He had a long running relationship with famous singer, Phyllis McGuire, from the McGuire Sisters.  He had three daughters that he raised and adored very much.  He was also best friends with Frank Sinatra.

Given his abusive background from his own father, Sam proved to be nothing like his old man when raising his little girls. Sam’s daughters loved their father, which is shocking that this man could be two totally different guys at once.  Half the time he was a loving dad, while the other half he was one of the coldest hearted bosses ever to run Chicago.

Director, Dimitri Logothetis (Champions Forever, The Lost Angel), does a great job of not only showing us the two sides to Sam, but also revealing secrets about his life that I would have never known.  Including how Sam helped John F. Kennedy get elected President by swinging several Midwest and eastern states.  He was also hired by the CIA to assassinate Fidel Castro.

Just from the batch of documentaries this year, if you want an informative and gripping documentary that will literally haunt you even after it is over, watch God Love Uganda.  However, you will still be pleased with Momo: The Sam Giancana Story.

Available on DVD and Streaming on November 19th

Movie Review: “The Starving Games” Is A Surprisingly Funny Spoof

I had given up on watching any more parody films after Meet the Spartans.  They were starting to become more about product placement and celebrity bashing instead of maintaining a story-line and making fun of the actual film.  The Starving Games made me remember why I enjoyed films like Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie.

In this Hunger Games parody, Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh) volunteers herself to save her sister, Petunia (Kennedy Hermansen), from fighting in the 75th annual Starving Games.  Kantmiss must fight for her life along with her secret admirer, Peter Malarky (Cody Christen) in order to win an old ham, a coupon for a Subway foot-long, and a partially eaten pickle.  All while a jealous Dale (Brant Daughtery) watches the action on the big screen.

There are a slew of other films that are poked at in this movie including, Harry Potter, OZ the Great and Powerful, and The Avengers.  Believe it or not, their appearances do not come off completely random.  Therefore, it is actually funny.

Pretty Little Liars’ fans will be happy to see the supporting actors of their teen drama, play leading men, as Dale and Peter.   Overall, this was a good comedic cast.  Especially, Maiara Walsh who bears a striking resemblance to Jennifer Lawrence.  I particularly loved the portrayal of Peter as an exaggerated coward.

The Starving Games is probably more satisfying as a rental.  But if you have seen The Hunger Games, the spoof is worth the laughs.

Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, comic violence, language and partial nudity.

The Starving Games hits theaters November 8th.

Movie Review: “Exit 727” has an Interesting Story but the Wrong Execution

I’m going to try and not be too hard on this film, because it was Eric Ortiz’s first time directing, writing, and acting in his own full length film.  Given that the film is based on true events, it is probably also special to him.  The story is actually pretty interesting, but the film-making and acting is so amateur that it is hard to take anything going on in this movie seriously.

The film begins with Michael (Jereme Badger), previous druggie, recounting the events that happened during a fatal summer.  Michael, his brother Dominic (Eric Ortiz), and their friend Ben (Anthony Ashmore) had given up all hope on life.  Unable to accomplish their dreams, they settle for a construction worker job where they meet bad boy James (Nathan Spiteri).  He might have been the only experienced actor in the film, and the most tolerable to watch.  It might have been the Australian accent, but he at least fully committed to his character.

After Dominic pulls his antics on the boss, everyone gets fired.  Angry at Dominic for causing him to loose his job, James pressures the guys to help him rob a bank.  And it all goes down hill from there.

Ortiz might want to focus more on his screenwriting skills versus his directing and acting.  He proved he could deliver lines quickly, but failed to have any meaning behind them.  As far as camera work goes, I’ve seen better filming from my past production classes. The beginning had some awkward out-of-focus shots, and the movie had too many unnecessary scenes.  I’m not sure who was in charge of audio, but the sound was all over the place.  At times, it was as if the characters had been mute or maybe they were just mumbling; I’m not really sure.

The premise gives this movie so much potential.  Had the movie been filmed differently, and with better acting it would have made for an admirable independent film.  Sadly, Exit 727 fails to perceive the impact or message it was trying to get across.

Movie Review: “About Time” will Capture your Heart

Lately, I have been a little bit of a cynic when it comes to romantic comedies.  As much as I still enjoy a really cute predictable one, Don Jon managed to slap some sense into me.  The false expectations that we get from romantic films can really alter your view of a relationship.  So even though I was excited to see this film, I expected that I wouldn’t be able to relate to the time traveling and romance.  However, About Time is the kind of movie that makes you want to fall in love.

The creators of Love Actually and Notting Hill have brought us another charming and delightful love story.  This time they have added a bit of time travel.

At age 21, Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers that he can travel back in time.  His father (Bill Nighy) explains to him that the men in his family have always been able to do this, and that it must be kept secret.  Now, he can only go back to a time that he remembers and was actually a part of.  So no, he can not go back in time and stop Abraham Lincoln from getting shot.

For Tim, this power was meant to be used to find love.  Sadly, this is not as easy as you would think.  “All the time travel in the world can’t make someone love you.” Finally one night, with out having to use his powers, he meets the girl of his dreams.  Mary (Rachel McAdams) is a smart, adorable, and oddly insecure woman who could not be more perfect for Tim.  They hit off immediately.  Unfortunately, after Tim foolishly travels back in time to help a friend, Mary knows him as a complete stranger.  This leads to multiple “first time” meetings, until he can win her over again.

I have to say, this is one of the best onscreen couples I have ever enjoyed watching.  Though you would think the time travel aspect of it would maybe lessen the relationship, it only makes you appreciate it more.  McAdams and Gleeson portray such a realistic relationship with a genuine love for each other.  It may not be steamy, sexual, off the charts chemistry.  But it is the real respect and caring for one another that makes them so engaging.  Not to mention some super cute moments.  But this romance is only part of the story.

Surprisingly enough, the bigger picture behind this film isn’t about love, it is about life.  Through some incredibly touching moments between Tim and his father, we are shown just how important is to take time and notice the little things in life.

The film really makes you wonder.  If you had the power to travel back in time, what would do? Where would you go?  Who would you talk to?  Ultimately, you are given a second chance and you want to take advantage of it.  Tim gets braver and bolder at each “try again” he attempts.  What About Time really teaches you is how we should not waste time wishing for second chances.  Instead, we should be treating every moment like it is our last.

Rated R for language and some sexual content.

About Time hits theaters November 1st.

Staying for Halloween? Here are the Top 7 Best Horror Flicks

Okay, let me just start off by saying this was one of the hardest list I have had to make.  There are so many good horror flicks, for so many different reasons.  Notice I could not pick 5, even though there are some honorable mentions.

I know some of us would rather take it easy on a Thursday night; Halloween doesn’t stop work from coming the next day.  So for those you who are just going to chill and pass out candy to the little ones, here are a few horror film suggestions to top off your night!

Note: All films must be watched in the dark and with proper focus for the full terror affect.

7. I know what you did Last Summer 1 & 2

Is he dead?

For the Slasher:  I know Scream is more preferred among fans, but I have always preferred the story-line in I know what you did Last Summer.  It is slightly less cheesy and in my opinion a scarier film.  Plus it stars four of the biggest celebs of the 90’s, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prince Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. If you are going to watch the first one you must watch the second, it all ties together very well and you will be satisfied with the story.

6. Final Destination

You can’t run from Death

For the Deaths: I don’t even know how many of these sequels they have made now.  All I know is you must watch the original in 2D.  The idea of death chasing after you might keep you up tonight, but how these characters die will make you more cautious than usual.  The film will have you immediately engaged and on the edge of your seat.

5. Stir of Echoes

Does it hurt to be dead?

For the Twist:  Personally my favorite horror flicks are the ones with the best twists.  What Lies Beneath and The Uninvited are great examples.  You give me a mystery to follow and an ending I would not expect, all while having my eyes half opened, and I’m sold!  Stir of Echoes is the whole package kind of scary movie.  Good acting, original story, fear while watching, and a great twist.

4. The Ring

Seven Days…

For the Nightmares:  I can not guarantee that you will be as terrified as I was when first saw this film in 8th grade.  I can tell you that after I saw it, for two weeks straight I slept with the lights and TV on in my room.  I thought that would prevent Samara from turning it on her self and coming out of it.  Either way, you get my point.  The Ring will make you think twice before you dare to watch a tape that will kill you 7 days later!

3. The Exorcist

May the power of Christ compel you!

For the Classic: I feel like this one does not need much explaining.  If you’ve seen it you might wonder why it is not number 1.  Surprisingly enough 2 other films haunt me more.  The horrors that happen in The Exorcist can be prevented.  Just do not ever play with a Ouija board. Done!  I can sleep a little easier now.  None the less, this an incredibly well made film for its time and cult classic.

2. Paranormal Activity

It’s getting worse

For the Ending: Another scary movie with too many sequels.  But again, nothing beats the original.  Lets put aside the fact that this film only cost $15,000 to make and made $9.1 million its first week!  The acting is surprisingly good?  The story is so simple.  And the end is one of the scariest scenes I have ever seen in a film.

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Who will survive and what will be left of them?

For the Chainsaw:  “Five friends visiting their grandpa’s old house are hunted down and terrorized by a chainsaw wielding killer and his family of grave-robbing cannibals.” Of course I am talking about the 1974 version of this film.  Imaging Leatherface chasing his victims with a chainsaw still haunts me.  This film is gruesome, disturbing and perfect for any Halloween evening!

Honorable Mentions: Child’s Play, Nightmare on Elm Street, Carrie (1976), It

Movie Review: Diana Is A Cheesy Romantic Comedy Without A Happy Ending

First off, Diana is not as bad as some critics have made it out to be. I mean I did see The Counselor last week so I’m still more scarred from that disaster. The idea of seeing the way Diana lived the last two year of her life was a good one, however the script in which they told her story for it, was not.

The film begins on that tragic Paris night, at the Ritz Hotel. As Diana (Naomi Watts), her lover at the time, Dodi Fayed, and a small security detail enter the elevator to leave after dinner. We watch through a security camera as they go down the elevator in silence. We know what is about to happen next but we don’t see it. Instead the movie rewinds two years before her death. Princess Diana is separated from Charles and living in Kensington Palace.

While visiting a friend in the hospital she encounters, Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews), to whom she gets an immediate attraction too. “The most beautiful thing she has seen,” to put it in her own words. He seems to have barely noticed her, making Diana want him more. Sound like a Rom-Com yet? Thus begins the infamous secret love affair with the Pakistani heart surgeon. From that point on we have an almost cliché romantic comedy, filled with break ups and makes up. Diana is portrayed more like a desperate teenager who will stop at nothing (even stalker procedures) to get the man she wants. And like she says in the film, “I’m a princess and I always get what I want.” Yes, she actually said that, but sadly that was not the corniest line.

Like any good rom-com, when the couple breaks up for good, the girl must breakdown. Time to party, meet a new guy, and make sure it is all photographed so your ex can get jealous.

It is too bad the film was focusing primarily on her love story with Khan. The best parts of the movie are when we get to see Diana do all her charitable work. Including the actions she took to support the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

On a good note, Naomi Watts did a great job. She looked so much like Diana. Watts wears a prosthetic nose, and works eagerly to capture Diana’s modest expressions and body language. And she nails it! It is just too bad she could not have been given a more powerful script. As for Naveen Andrews, he might have done better if the real Hasnat would have been involved in the making of this film. Instead, he seemed more confused about how he should feel about her in this movie than I did.

Diana has its entertaining moments and could be a guilty pleasure for some, but it might not have been the best way to bring back the memory of Princess Di.

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language, some sensuality and smoking.

Diana hits theaters November 1st.

Interviews: George Takei & Jimmy Hayward Talk Free Birds On The Red Carpet In Dallas

What if the turkey was never part of our Thanksgiving Day meal?

In the new animated comedy, Free Birds, two heroic turkeys must go back in time and stop turkey from ever being on the Thanksgiving menu.

Reel FX Animation Studios in Dallas has completed their first full length animated film.  For their first film, they could not have done any better.  This is one film the whole family should see!  The movie provides a hilarious script, an original storyline, and a superb production quality.

Feeling like he does not fit in with his own flock, Reggie (Owen Wilson) gets an opportunity to become a “lone turkey.”  After a forceful encounter with Jake (Woody Harrelson), Reggie must join in the mission to travel back in time and get the turkey off of the holiday menu for good.  Once S.T.E.V.E (George Takei) the time machine takes them to three days before the first Thanksgiving, Reggie meets Jenny (Amy Poehler) and the rest of her flock.  As he gets to know his new friends and grows feelings for Jenny, Reggie starts to realize he may have found the flock he always wanted to be apart of.

A slew of talent, including everyone from Reel FX showed up for the Dallas premiere of Free Birds held at the Cinemark 17 and IMAX Theater.  Among those talents were writer/director, Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who) and Star Trek legend, George Takei.  Both of these incredibly nice guys took time to chat on the red carpet.

Great job in the film, you have such a defined voice, great for any film or voice over.  What attracted you to this project?

George: “Well first of all, I like the idea.  I think we’re too stayed and traditional; the same old menu year after year. I used to look forward to Thanksgiving, because you know we didn’t have turkey the rest of the year.  The only time we had turkey was at Thanksgiving.  But now, we can have turkey all the time.  And with this movie, I think were going to get people to be creative with their Thanksgiving menu.  We might have fish, or this is Texas, roast beef?  Nice and red and bloody, I like it rare, you know?  So it will set them to thinking.  We know what the movie recommends, and that’s a great idea too.”

So this is the perfect film to get you in the mood for the holidays?

Jimmy: “Oh yeah, absolutely!  The film’s not about what you eat.  The film is more about how you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.  All holidays, doesn’t matter if it is Passover or Thanksgiving or whatever holiday it is.  It’s about pressing pause in your life, and taking time to appreciate the people you love.”

The film talks about how “when you’re in a flock you know you belong.”  Being apart of a flock in this film industry, when did you know you belonged?

George: “When they started casting me (Laughs).  You know, when you’re beginning in this business you’re aspiring.  You go to interview after interview and you talk to them. Then they will say you’re too tall or too short; too fat or too skinny.  And it’s always too this or too that.  I’ve even been told that I’m either too Asian or not Asian enough!  I mean how do I get Asian enough? (Laughs)  Both my parents are Asian you know?  So were my grandparents, and yet they say, you’re not Asian enough (Laughs).  So at that point, you feel like you just want them to cast you so you can show them how good you are once you’re on the set.  But now, when they come to you and say, will you be in our film or do the voice in our film, it’s wonderful and I feel like I very much belong now.”

Jimmy: “I think once I actually got to work with a bunch of people in a group.  Filmmaking is really a collaborative effort.  So you are naturally apart of a flock as soon as you get on a film…provided there a good flock (Laughs).”

You play S.T.E.V.E the time machine in the film.  What would you change if you could go back in time?

“I would probably try to not have the Civil War.  All wars!  I would try to have a world where we don’t have to have wars.  And try to change the world into a happier, productive, well engaged place where we have no destruction.  Unfortunately, today we still have wars and you see the news and the horrors that happen.  So I think that’s the best way to change the world.”

Free Birds is the perfect Thanksgiving film to set the mood for this holiday season!
